FAQ's
1. How long is the burn time? How bright is the light?
The burn time is 45 minutes on high and about 3.5 - 4 hours on low. If the Ecolight is charged in the sun, this will be the approximate duration of light from one charge. If it is charged by the AC or car charger, the duration of light is about 5 - 6 minutes less because in the fast charge, not all the micro-spaces in the supercapacitors fill up; a slower charge fill most of the spaces up which results in a longer burn time because more electricity is stored.
On high the light is very bright because of the 1 Watt LED, the output = about 50 lumens in the first 1/2 of the output cycle. On low the light is not nearly as bright as high, but is still useable for reading or for walking at night or getting around in the dark. The Ecolight has compared with the 2-D cell Maglite flashlight and the Ecolight is noticeably brighter.
2. What is the cost?
Retail price is $44. At this time we are offering the AC charger cord for free with each purchase of an Ecolight. The price of the car charger is $7.30.
3. Where will it be available?
The Ecolight is available on this website along with AC and Car chargers.
4. What are the AC and Car chargers?
These chargers charge the Ecolight fully in about 4.25 minutes - this fast charge is because super capacitors can be charged very quickly with no damage or heat build up. The AC charger is a cord that plugs into a USB port in a computer and into the Ecolight (the computer has to be on). The car charger plugs into a car cigarette lighter socket and has a USB port in it. The AC charger cord plugs into this USB port and the other end into the Ecolight. The car charger will charge your other devices that use a USB port to charge from because the power output is the same as a computer's USB port (5 volts D.C., 500 milliamps). Use the AC charge cord plugged into any other charger with a USB port (iPhone, iPod and cell phone chargers) for quick charging of the Ecolight.
5. Is the AC or Car charger needed?
No, the solar panel on the handle will charge the Ecolight in about 1 hour and is all you need to charge this flashlight. The optional AC and Car chargers are a handy item for people who want an additional or fast way to charge it - say if you're camping and use the charge up in the evening, you can do a quick charge on it in your car and have up to 3.5 - 4 more hours of light. We are currently including the AC charger cord at no extra charge when you buy the Ecolight so you'll always have the option for a fast charge if there is a computer near by (the computer has to be on for it to work).
6. How long with the Ecolight hold a charge?
After a full charge, the Ecolight will loose about 50% of its stored power after 30 - 40 days if the solar panel is not exposed to light. To keep it fully charged, place it where it will get either a little sunlight on the solar panel or in a room that is brightly lit. You may need to experiment with this to learn how to keep it fully charged with the solar panel. It will hold a charge longer and hold a little more power if charged in the sun since the slower charging fills up the spaces in the super capacitor a little better than the fast charge from the AC and car chargers.
7. What is the ergonomic switch and handle?
The ergonomic switch is a completely new design that uses a circular motion of the switch knob to actuate an electrical switch on the circuit board inside the flashlight. To actuate High, Off and Low, all movements are done with forward pushes of your thumb which is the easiest movement for your thumb. Most flashlights require you to forward push with your thumb to turn the switch on, and then pull back with your thumb to turn it off. Other flashlights with a push button require you to push down with your thumb and this is a little harder for you thumb than forward pushes, and more importantly it gets confusing as to what setting you're on if you have more than just Off and On. Our three settings are noted as the switch knob moves with an indicator line pointing to the symbols for Off, High and Low.
The ergonomic handle is curved to fit your hand very comfortably so that your thumb rests right where the switch knob is, and so that the back end of your hand (where your little finger is) feels the back end flair of the flashlight as a natural stop so it won't slide easily out of your hand. The Ecolight also comes with a lanyard attached to the back end.
8. What is the advantage of using a super capacitor or ultra capacitor?
There are a number of advantages: They are made completely of non-toxic components. They can be recharged over 30,000 times (most rechargeable batteries get about 500 recharges). They can take a charge very quickly and they store energy well. They also operate much better at higher and lower temperatures than batteries do. So the overall advantage is that you get an ultra-fast charging energy storage unit that will last many years longer than a rechargeable battery without the toxicity of any chemicals. Supercapacitors and LEDs represent a new technology in flashlights that eliminate the need for any replacement batteries or bulbs.
9. What is the Warranty?
We offer a 2-Year Full Warranty: We will repair without charge any
defects to faulty materials or workmanship for 2 years from
date of purchase. We agree to replace a defective Ecolight
if a repair cannot be made. This warranty does not cover
part failure due to tool abuse.
